Location & Moment

Rising from the heart of Pierre, the South Dakota State Capitol was built between 1905 and 1910 — a vision in stone and light. Designed in the classical revival style, its marble halls, domed rotunda, and symbolic murals reflect both ambition and humility. The Capitol connects east and west, old and new — a bridge between the prairie and the people who govern it.

History & Architecture

Modeled after the Montana Capitol, South Dakota’s seat of government was crafted using local materials — Black Hills granite, Custer sandstone, and native brick. The dome’s interior glows with imported Italian mosaics, and the rotunda floor bears 66 blue tiles — one for each county in the state. Murals celebrate agriculture, industry, and community, reminding visitors that this building stands not for power, but for purpose.

The Supreme Court

At the top of the Capitol sits the South Dakota Supreme Court — a chamber of oak and marble where five justices interpret the law. Restored to its 1910 appearance, the room speaks of balance, patience, and dignity. Here, decisions are made in quiet tones, beneath murals of wisdom and liberty, ensuring that justice moves as steadily as the Missouri below.

Women in Leadership

South Dakota granted women the right to vote in 1918, ahead of the nation. A century later, Governor Kristi Noem became the first woman to lead the state — a reflection of South Dakota’s evolving story. From early suffragists to today’s leaders, the Capitol now echoes voices that once stood outside its doors — proof that progress can be quiet yet lasting.

Artist’s Reflection

Inside these walls, sunlight meets marble,
and history moves through every hall.

The dome is a compass — pointing not to power,
but to the promise of fairness.

I painted here to feel that balance,
between stone and sky, law and land.
